European Data Act entered into force on 11 Jan 2024
This month, the European Data Act entered into force, which marks a key
milestone in the European data strategy. It aims to facilitate data
exchange and use to boost the EU’s data economy. The new rules give
customers more control over the data collected by connected devices.
Product and service providers must provide data access to users free of
charge and allow them to share data with third parties of their own choice.
Also, the regulation makes it easier for customers to switch between cloud
service providers. Furthermore, it strengthens public safety by giving
public sector access to data held in the private sector for public
emergency responses. Read more here

Our founding organsation member Sitra <https://www.sitra.fi/en/> (Finnish
innovation fund) recently published a working paper
<https://www.sitra.fi/en/publications/ensuring-european-leadership-in-the-data-economy/>
that provides proposals to the EU to boost the data economy. Ten priorities
include strengthening development of critical technologies, supporting AI
and digital literacy, promoting data-driven business models and etc.

*Athumi <https://athumi.eu/en/> and Datavillage
<https://www.datavillage.me/> in collaboration with Dutch Data Vault
Foundation*

Congratulations to our organisation members Athumi <https://athumi.eu/en/>
and Datavillage <https://www.datavillage.me/> on kicking off a
groundbreaking collaboration with Dutch Data Vault Foundation in January.
They aim to introduce a personal data vault in the Netherlands by 2025 to
ensure customers regain control of their own data.

*Sense-checking MyData, Democracy and AI. *

In January, MyData Global held workshops to sense check our thinking on key
issues emergent and perennial. The workshop on democracy sought to test
assumptions about how MyData principles and approaches contribute to
democratic systems and practices. The AI workshop sought to question
whether there was actually anything new posed by all the hype around
generative AI, and whether we should think differently about our mission in
the AI-age.

Both workshops produced novel insights and ideas for activities. We’ll
follow up to continue the conversation and explore collaborations. Get
involved by joining the #society slack channel
<https://mydataglobal.slack.com/archives/CFWS6ES7Q>to discuss democracy and
the #AI-ethics channel <https://mydataglobal.slack.com/archives/CAR71JHPV>
to discuss AI.

*Call for Contributions on Information and Democracy *

The Observatory on Information and Democracy, where MyData’s Projects Lead
Carlos Iglesias is participating as member of the Data Governance Thematic
Group, invites all researchers, academics and scholars to submit existing
research that investigates the impact of technology on our information
ecosystem in the following priority thematic areas:

   - Artificial Intelligence, information ecosystems and democracy
   - Media Politics and Trust
   - Data Governance and Democracy
   - Misinformation and Disinformation

This call remains open until 15 April. Find more information here

for preparing for the future release of the Data Spaces Blueprint 1.0 - due
in March 2024. It was a productive meeting with lots of discussions about
architectural design for interoperable European data spaces, as well as how
to make the main asset, the Blueprint user-friendly to absorb. MyData is
taking an important role in leading the work on data space intermediary
building block, as well as contributing to many other developments with the
expertise on human-centric approach to personal data.

PS! Don’t miss out on the *Data Spaces Symposium *on *12-14 March near
Frankfurt, Germany* - it’s a place to be for learning about market-ready
use cases and advanced technology solutions for existing and future data
spaces. Similarly, it will showcase the pivotal work done by the Data
Spaces Support Centre in providing a solid blueprint for common European
data spaces, acting as a cornerstone of the European Data Strategy. More

*New Project NextGen contributes to health data space*

We are thrilled to announce our participation in an ambitious new project,
*NextGen*, which aims to significantly contribute to the advancement of the
health data space. Our project's lead, Carlos Iglesias, will be attending
the inaugural meeting in Utrecht, hosted by the project coordinator,
Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht, on February 5th and 6th.

NextGen is set to address one of Europe's most pressing health challenges:
cardiovascular disease. The project aspires to revolutionize personalized
medicine, focusing on prevention, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment
tailored to individual needs. This promises to set a new standard in the
health data domain, offering hope for millions affected by cardiovascular
diseases and setting a precedent for the future of personalised medicine
and ethical data management in the health context. More details to come!
