... We have come across a very interesting side by side comparison of Intel's Classmate PC and the OLPC. Beginning with the chip specs (Intel 900Mhz Mobil and AMD Geode LX-700) the OLPC wins with it's low power consuming CPU giving it double the battery life, one of the most important factors when you're out in the middle of nowhere. The OLPC also whips the Classmate PC on charging options. While the OLPC can take power from pretty much anything that will crank out a little juice, Intel's box is no more flexible that the MacBook I am typing this post on. Add to that a built in camera, a dual-mode hi-res screen (for in and outdoor viewing) and a price that's $75 lower and it becomes obvious that the OLPC was designed from the beginning to meet a specific need while the Classmate PC is essentially a stripped down, low specced laptop built down to a price. I don't want to knock Intel as they are making an effort to bring computers to the Third World, but the project is starting to look more and more like a cheap effort to get their claws into an emerging market. ... http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2007/04/intel_olpc_smac.html -- ________________________________________ http://olpc.ellak.gr
