This week on TED.com, *Sugata Mitra* talks about the "Hole in
the Wall" project -- where kids in an Indian neighborhood figured out (on
their own) how to use a PC and mouse, and then taught their friends. We've
all seen kids do things like this, figuring out a new toy or the universal
remote, but Mitra asks the next logical question: How can traditional
schools harness the immense power of children to teach one another?

Also this week, watch *John Q. Walker* "re-perform" great piano pieces, with
software that brings greats like Art Tatum back to life. Blogger *Ory
Okolloh* tells the moving, personal story of how she committed herself to
making Kenya a better place for her family. From last week, check out
physicist *Patricia Burchat*, who is searching the universe for dark matter
and dark energy. It's a mind-expanding topic that she explains clearly. And
*National Geographic* photography director *David Griffin* talks about the
powerful ways that photographs can connect us.

Speaking at LIFT 2007, Sugata Mitra talks about his "Hole in the Wall"
project. Young kids in this project figured out how to use a PC on their own
-- and then taught other kids. Given this, he asks, what else can children
teach themselves and each other? *Watch this talk

Imagine hearing great, departed pianists like Glenn Gould and Art Tatum play
again today, just as they would in person. John Q. Walker demonstrates how
recordings can be analyzed for precise keystrokes and pedal motions, then
played back on computer-controlled grand pianos. *Watch this talk

universe: dark matter and dark energy. Comprising 96% of the universe

A key word I picked up is *imposed*. There's clearly an emotional and mental
gap when it comes to empowering children to learn "imposed" material as
opposed to having them go on their own and utilizing a tool (like the
computer) to learn. What is apparent to me is that the children [in this
experiment] expressed interest on their own. It was a choice. Whereas,
speaking from the U.S. educational system, we force learning on our
children. It's not inspired. When's the last time you wanted to learn
something when you were told you "had to do it"?

*Lauren Cooper* on Nellie McKay's

If you get to know her performances, you'll realize that her coy, innocent
demeanor belies a wickedly clever social satirist. The elegant dresses and
fluffy retro hair serve as a counterpoint to her hardcore activist
ideologies. Check YouTube for her appearance on "The View," where her subtle
feminist lyrics flew hilariously over the heads of her unsuspecting hosts.
