Η παρακάτω ανακοίνωση είναι αρκετά σημαντική. Υπάρχουν διάφοροι μηχανισμοί γραφής (input method) στο γραφικό περιβάλλον X και η RedHat θέλει να φτιάξει ένα νέο γενικό μηχανισμό για τη διανομή Fedora και τις νέες εκδόσεις των διανομών της. Από ότι φαίνεται στην παρακάτω ανακοίνωση, υπάρχουν πολλές πιθανότητες το έργο να πετύχει. - Τί μας ενδιαφέρει εμάς; - Πρέπει να δούμε αν το νέο σύστημα θα αντικαταστήσει το XΚΒ (μηχανισμός γραφής του XFree86) ή θα είναι σε χρήση μόνο για εξωτικές (ασιατικές) γλώσσες. Αυτή τη στιγμή το έργο βρίσκεται στο στάδιο του "σχεδιασμού". Σε περίπτωση που υπάρξει αντικατάσταση του XKB, είναι σημαντικό να υπάρξει το χαρακτηριστικό του XKB με τα πολλαπλά νεκρά πλήκτρα, για τη γραφή πολυτονικού. Όπως είναι τώρα (XKB), για το γράψιμο του π.χ. ω με οξεία (?) και περισπωμένη ο χρήστης πατάει το πρώτο νεκρό πλήκτρο για την οξεία, το δεύτερο νεκρό πλήκτρο για την περισπωμένη και τελικά το "ω". Εδώ υπάρχει ανάγκη για 2 νεκρά πλήκτρα. Το XKB μπορεί να πάει μέχρι 6 νεκρά πλήκτρα. Δυστυχώς δε έχω τη βιβλιογραφία αλλά κάποιος έλληνας προγραμματιστής στο XFree86 τους έπεισε μετά από αρκετές αντιρρήσεις για χώρο 6 νεκρών πλήκτρων (στο πολυτονικό νομίζω ότι το μέγιστο είναι 4 νεκρά πλήκτρα/φωνήεν με διαφορετικά τονικά σημάδια). Οπότε, πρέπει να δούμε το μέγιστο αριθμό για "τονικά σημάδια" σε ένα φωνήεν στο πολυτονικό για να ξεκαθαρίσουμε τον αριθμό των νεκρών πλήκτρων και να ζητήσουμε από το IIIMF να υπάρξει το αντίστοιχο μέγεθος. Είναι πιθανό τα βιετναμέζικα να έχουν παρόμοιες ανάγκες μιας και τα φωνήεντά τους μπορούν να δεχτούν πολλαπλά τονικά σημάδια.
