Below is the TagTeacherNet summary of the BECTA report's findings: Project aims: * To examine how well Open Source software works next to proprietary software * To compare cost of ownership 15 schools in survey used open source software next to 33 using proprietary software. Findings: * Total cost of ownership of a primary school PC using open source software was £691.92, compared to £1,228.04 for a non-open source primary school PC. * Total cost of ownership of a secondary school PC using open source PC rose to £787.32, compared to £1,035.70 for a non-open source PC. Technical Infrastructure * Open source operating systems were seen as having "lower costs, superior reliability and greater ease of use". * Linux on PCs takes up less memory and so allows the use of older machines without any loss of performance. Curriculum Software * Range of content specific Open Source software is very small. General Findings * Among secondary schools, training and self-support costs were found to be greater for open source software PCs, while formal support was actually lower. * Teachers in schools that used open source software were more positive in their assessment of their own IT skills, and more confident in their use of IT. * The Open Source project schools indicated a degree of reliance on an informed and experienced 'champion' of OSS.
