                     Visualizing "Follow the Money"
Feedback Session

*July 29, 2015, 12:30-2:00 ET*

How do payments from a giant international mining company affect villages
in one mineral-rich state? Where is open data available or missing to
"follow the money" between companies, ministries and local communities?
With dozens of NGOs and donors working for fiscal transparency, how can we
share information to collaborate better?

To help answer these questions, the World Bank and several groups in the
Follow the Money Network have been developing a simple, reusable chart that
can map flows of oil and mining money or aid, and attach dollar amounts,
transparency scores or other "layers" to a basic visualization.

*Please join us for a lunch time preview and feedback session on this
Follow the Money Visual: July 29 at 12:30 ET at the OpenGov Hub in
Washington, D.C. **(Watch the registration page below for details on remote
dial-in.)*

We’ve begun modestly with a static picture—not a fancy data tool—in order
to test our assumptions with colleagues at small and large organizations.
Building from this “base map,” we plan to define a range of uses and
adaptable layers. (As with most open data projects, we expect that the best
ideas for new uses will come from a wider collaborative community.)

Most importantly, we believe that by making a visualization that can be
repurposed for different uses, we can give the groups that use it a channel
for collaboration—or at least a common reference point to work for greater
openness, interoperability and usability of financial data.
