Re: ARXEIO ERT STO DIADIKTYO

::BBC Press Office::

"The BBC and Adobe(R) Systems Incorporated, today (Tuesday 16
October) announced a strategic relationship around the delivery of web
video.
By adopting the Adobe Flash(R) Player software, the BBC will make
its free catch-up TV service – BBC iPlayer – available as a streaming
service across Macintosh and Linux(R), as well as Microsoft
Windows(R), by the end of the year.
The strategic relationship will also allow the BBC to provide a
single consistent user experience for the majority of streamed video
and audio content on bbc.co.uk.
The BBC iPlayer on-demand streaming service will complement the
download service currently available. This non-exclusive relationship
is part of the BBC's strategy to reinvent bbc.co.uk to ensure that all
its rich-media content is accessible to the widest audience possible."

::BBC Future Media and Technology Director, Ashley Highfield, interviewed::

---
Ashley Highfield :[...] going forward, we are looking at two long-term
solutions. One is an open source solution to DRM. The other -- because
I think that is probably only an interim solution -- the long-term
alternative solution is a world beyond DRM and how we can work
together, particularly with our rights holders, to get to a world
beyond DRM. [...] let me just address that point of the situation we
are in at the moment is because of DRM. [...] Where we want to get to
is a much more flexible world where the content would be free of DRM.
Now, that as an outcome would be of benefit for the audience, would be
of benefit for the BBC. We've got to find ways in which that would not
harm the rights holders' business. And that really is, I suppose, a
challenge, and it's a challenge for all of us to work together on.
---
Q: Now, a moment ago you mentioned that you were looking at a free
software implementation of DRM. Is it OpenIPMP, or Java DReaM? Which
one are you looking at?
---
Q: All right. Last question: I think you'd agree with me that the
movement of video online is inevitable --
Ashley Highfield: Yes.
