Development of DIY Robotic Kit

Hello, 

 I would like to ask would it be a good idea if we minimize the number
of 3D printed parts ,if possible just the gearbox and wheels thereby
using the PCB of the bot as base with all components attached to it. It
would be quite different from Lego Mindstorms and would not have much
DIY in mechanical stuffs but will offer more sensors and versatility in
terms of robotic application.
