Dear GFOSS Development Team, after spending the past days reading the paper "Well-Typed Programs Can Go Wrong", looking through the Hephaestus project's code, reading and joining the mailing list, and learning more about type-checking in compilers, I have taken a great interest in the open-source project and what the team is trying to accomplish. The topics of testing and bug-hunting have always intrigued me, so naturally, this project drew me. The fact that Hephaestus has already found more than a hundred bugs in the Java, Groovy, and Kotlin compilers only make it more interesting as to what it can accomplish in a language that has risen in popularity and usage in the past years, such as TypeScript. Firstly, I would like to introduce myself, I am a passionate second-semester Computer Science student at the University of Economics and Business. I have python, Java, Javascript, and C++ knowledge. I have attached my resume, which contains a link to my GitHub profile. Secondly, I would like to apologize for not communicating with the team earlier. I admire both the work of the project's contributors and the depth of their knowledge on the topic of JVM compilers, but also their persistence and motivation to find bugs in the compilers, which is a great contribution to the user-base of these languages that comes with little reward and recognition. This, I believe, is the core of open-source and is another reason that I am this interested in the project. Thirdly, I understand whether the nature of GSoC does not lead to my proposal being accepted, but I would like to contribute to the project regardless of whether I am accepted or not. How can we go about this? I am very passionate about contributing to Hephaestus and I would like to have some of the communication and guidance the mentors would have provided me in the program, even if I am working outside of GSoC. I am not looking at any other organizations or ideas, so I will definitely have the time to commit to the project if my proposal does not go through this year! Finally, would it be possible to send over a draft of my proposal and work through it with one of the mentors in order to improve it and get helpful tips? Thanks a lot in advance, and keep on improving the open-source community both in Greece and internationally. Kind regards, Alexios Papadopoulos-Siountris
