Software Technologies: Paradigm Shifts
The IST2003 conference took place in Milan, Italy on 2-4 October 2003. Its aim
was to remind the IST community, and others, of the opportunities that ICT offer
to citizens, businesses and governments.
One of the sessions was organised under the theme "Software Technologies:
Paradigm Shifts". The rationale behind this session was that the development of
software and services is a subject of continuing discussion. Issues of security,
open-source software, the software production gap and outsourcing of development
work to Asia and South America are in the news almost daily. In parallel, a new
phenomenon is emerging: 'software as a service', or under other names, 'software
on-demand' or 'eBusiness on-demand'. This refers to the use of software as a
utility provided, for example, by Application Service Providers and based on web
services.
The session participants attempted to answer the question: "Is provision of
software applications as a service the new paradigm in the software and service
market or is it just a new hype?" Speakers included experts exploring the new
paradigm in their daily work as well as representatives from classical
Information Technology consulting firms and from the open-source community.
