in any implementation, you would have to "walk the tree"
of directory entries, visiting each file to gather metadata
and entering every directory recursively.
all languages discussed here (C, C++, Python) provide mechanisms
for this functionality; some are more low-level and other are higher-level.
the functions defined in the POSIX <dirent.h> are the necessary
low-level building blocks in order to read directories.
