ehhhmmmm, software is IP. :-)
and licenses are the legal terms how this IP can be used.
that's what it's all about.
when you manage firefox (or any other Complex Component),
you have to know and keep track what it contains.
because, for example, it's ok to use libevent,
but you are required to list the person who wrote it.
and you have to fulfil this legal obligation --
check out about:license in firefox, for example.
